king of the rain
weather: clear
song in my head: 'goodnight elisabeth'-counting crows
just had probably the best lecture i've ever had. my sociology class is lectured by a different person each week. the overall topic right now is subcultures, and today was a lecture on the 'biker culture' by an authentic biker. she was very interesting and entertaining. some of what she spoke of is 'things sociologists do' that i think common people do and don't know why. she talked about how people that ride certain bikes have certain views, and are seen as certain types of people. in actuality, this is usually true, because within the biker culture, people understand what their bikes say about them, and generally choose bikes that say those things. i think this is often why stereotypes are correct. the danger comes in stereotyping people in things about which we have no knowledge.
i guess i'm really enjoying my classes here; they're very interesting. i don't think i've ever honestly been able to say that before. i love seeing how people view things differently, and i love seeing the culture, the slang, and the general ideas of a place. maybe i should do sociology...that's what, the 12-year plan?
there was a poor fellow today in my sociology seminar who apparently got picked on by chavs a few too many times, and spent most of the hour railing about what bad creatures they are.
for some reason, there were people dressed up today. one person had on a black, haphazard wig and a baseball cap that said 'wayne's world.' one of his buddies was dressed as fred flinstone, with a large head-thing (mask, if you will?) in his likeness. probably most comical was peter pan, a skinny blond with ruffled hair under his little green hat, complete with worn fringey eged suede shirt and shiny green tights. i think he must have been freezing. i wouldn't have worn it in this country.
today is clear and cold, which i've been told means it may snow. the wind is almost non-existent today, though, compared to other days, so it doesn't seem very bad. yesterday was extremely cold and was rainy, which usually means i wouldn't go out. but i really wanted a warm meal i didn't have to cook, so i talked to a few people and went down to the pub. only one other person ended up going with me, though. i ate a jacket potato with chicken tikka masala and it was warm and wonderful. by the time we ended up leaving, it was half-ten, so i didn't end up doing my laundry as planned. maybe tonight...
